Public: Train, Subway, Bus, Taxi
Depend on your needs, you may want to buy single-ride, 10-ride or monthly tickets. They are available on board, at the station or on line. The last option is always the cheapest. The travel cost may be fixed for any rides or calculated on the distance.
In some states, unused tickets expire after 3 months from the date of purchase, while in others, only 2 hours from the time of purchase. So, check the terms in advance.
I only took taxi in bad weather when I could not have either walked or waited for the bus.
Private: bicycle, car rental/ purchase
You can find a brand-new bicycle with a reasonable price at Walmart, KMart or Target. Do not forget to wear a helmet when you bike on the street.
If you own an international license, you can either buy a second-hand car from $3,000, or rent a car from $100/month.
