STUDY IN US UNIVERSITIES
Professors, Teaching Staffs and Academic Assistants
I have found it lucky to study in the US (or at least at Pace and Columbia, where I have pursued my research), since Professors and Teaching Staffs are so caring to students. They always spend as much time as possible to work with students on their project/ research. They would even set up an academic board to help a potential student apply for a competitive scholarship. In general, they always facilitate the study of their students.
It must be a big mistake not to appreciate Academic Assistants. They not only help students with their study, but also help foreign students solve any difficulties arising in their life.
Teaching Methods
Courses are conducted in different methods: Lecture, Seminar, Field Trip, Case Study. Lectures can be conducted on line (e-learning) between some universities, even outside the country. Whether which method is used, there are always communications and discussions between teachers and students.
I have been impressed by a course offered by the Environmental Litigation Clinic at Pace Law School. Each semester, about 10 outstanding students will be admitted. They will represent public interest groups in federal and state courts, federal and state administrative proceedings and occasionally in local proceedings. Participate in real cases helps students build work experiences.
Facilities
- Libraries
Hard copies and soft copies of publications are available in public and school libraries. In case you could not find a book, an article, etc., librarians will help you seek for it in Web Catalog or the Library of Congress.
Students also are given ID to access paid libraries in their major, e.g. West Law for law students.
Students may have chances to own new publications with liquidation price.
- Internet
Wireless networks are popular and available everywhere in the US. Equip your laptop with a wireless card to enjoy the facility wherever you are.
Almost schools have course syllabus and materials available on line with free access. Old tests and exam papers are sometimes published for reference.
On-line tutorials give more chances for study to people with a tight budget of time.
